Sichuan Launches Its First Regularly Scheduled China-Central Asia Freight Train Service
Updated: 2025.04.15

On April 13, an international freight train loaded with ivory board, home appliances, and various other products departed from Chengdu International Railway Port, heading to Tashkent, Uzbekistan. This marks the inaugural journey of the China-Central Asia freight train launched from Sichuan, signifying the introduction of a new, regular cross-border logistics channel from China's western region to Central Asia. The development infuses new momentum into inland companies' efforts to tap into the Eurasian market.

A relevant person in charge from China Railway Chengdu Group Co., Ltd. explained that a scheduled freight train service operates on fixed timetables, follows predetermined routes, and maintains regular trip frequencies. This approach—unlike the traditional "cargo waiting for trains" model—significantly improves rail transport efficiency. The weekly operation of the Sichuan-Central Asia scheduled freight train will offer notable benefits in terms of transportation time, cost and reliability. This rail solution ensures that southwest China's foreign trade companies receive a dependable cross-border shipping solution that is efficient, cost-effective, and consistently stable.

The inaugural train on that day carried cargo valued at nearly 14 million yuan, weighing approximately 3,200 tons. It is scheduled to exit through the Horgos Port and should reach Uzbekistan and other Central Asian countries in around ten days, traversing a total distance of about 4,800 kilometers. "To ensure the smooth inaugural run of this first scheduled Central Asia freight train, we deployed a dedicated task force to coordinate with both the rail operator and cargo forwarding and customs brokerage agencies. In advance, we understand the train's operation plan, formulate a customs clearance and supervision guarantee scheme, and schedule customs officers to work additional hours for the expedited inspection and release of the train's export cargo." According to Yang Jie, Chief of the First Supervision Section at Qingbaijiang Customs, Chengdu Customs District, future initiatives include actively advocating for the railway express model and pioneering the innovative "pre-loading inspections" processes. These measures will be seamlessly integrated with the operations of the Central Asia freight train, making exports to the region faster and more convenient.

"The Central Asian market has a strong demand for Chinese building materials, machinery, and electronic products. However, in the past, the transportation of bulk scattered cargo required multiple transfers, making it difficult to control efficiency and costs," said Gou Jun, General Manager of Sichuan Shanxiang Era Supply Chain Management Co., Ltd., the organization behind the train service. Gou added that the scheduled train realizes a "station-to-station" full-chain transportation, allowing companies to book cargo space and lock in freight rates in advance, significantly improving logistics efficiency.

Currently, Chengdu has established a "quad-directional" international logistics transportation system with Chengdu-Chongqing as the center, extending westward to Europe, northward to Mongolia and Russia, eastward to Japan and South Korea, and southward to ASEAN countries. Next, it will explore the operation of special trains for cold chain logistics and cross-border e-commerce.
